A Schwarz domain decomposition method can be used to improve the performance of a Legendre collocation method. The ill-conditioning of the spectral method can be avoided by splitting the domain into several subdomains. These methods have been used to solve the Rayleigh-Bénard convection problem for large aspect ratios and Rayleigh numbers. Even a turbulence regime can be reached.
